“Emmanuel — God With Us”24” x 20” | Oil on Canvas

As I painted the hands of baby Jesus wrapped around Mary’s fingers, I kept thinking about how God chose to enter the world—reaching out, holding on, and letting Himself be held.

Before Jesus ever reached for the crowds, the sick, the broken, or the cross, He reached for His mother. His very first touch was one of trust, tenderness, and connection. The Savior of all creation came not with force or fanfare, but with a gentle grasp—small, vulnerable, and fully dependent.

This is the mystery of Emmanuel: God with us.

God did not remain distant. He did not save from afar. He came close enough to be touched. Close enough to need comfort. Close enough to be held in human hands. In that quiet manger moment, heaven met earth through something as simple—and as profound—as a child’s grip around his mother’s finger.

The tiny hands of Jesus already carried the promise of redemption. Though small, they were the same hands that would one day heal the sick, bless the children, break the bread, and be pierced for the sake of the world. And Mary, with her steady, faithful hands, became the first to feel the miracle—holding the One who would one day hold all of creation together.

This painting is an invitation to slow down in the Christmas season and recover a sense of holy wonder. It reminds us that God still comes close. He still reaches for us. He still places His light into human hands and human hearts.

Emmanuel is not only a truth we celebrate at Christmas—it is a reality we live in every day. God with us in our vulnerability. God with us in our quiet moments. God with us when all we can do is reach out and hold on.

My prayer is that as you look at this painting, you feel the tenderness of that first holy touch—and the nearness of a God who willingly came close enough to hold and be held.
